The Freezer on Fulton: Griffins Hockey and the Arena That Anchors Downtown

Van Andel Arena — the Freezer on Fulton, in the fans' phrase — is home to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. As the AHL season settles into its winter rhythm, the arena district settles into its own.

Some buildings earn a nickname and some are given one by a marketing department; the Freezer on Fulton is the first kind. Van Andel Arena opened in 1996 on Fulton Street in downtown's Heartside district, and the Grand Rapids Griffins have played there ever since — first in the old IHL, then in the American Hockey League, where they are the top development affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. The relationship shows on the ice: the Griffins' roster is where Detroit's prospects learn the professional game, and the club has delivered two Calder Cup championships, in 2013 and 2017, that this city celebrated like major-league titles.

The AHL's bargain is the best in Michigan sports: near-NHL hockey, in a walkable downtown arena, at minor-league prices, with the intimacy of a 10,000-seat building where the crowd noise stays inside. Griffins crowds are famously local — families on weekend nights, youth hockey teams in the upper bowl, and a season-ticket base that has renewed through every era of the parent club's fortunes. When a Red Wings prospect heats up in Grand Rapids, Detroit notices; the 130 miles between the arenas is a pipeline, not a distance.

The arena itself, owned by the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority and named for Jay and Betty Van Andel, does double and triple duty around the hockey schedule — the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G League, the Grand Rapids Rise volleyball club, concerts and family shows fill its calendar, and the arena district's bars and restaurants plan their weeks around its event nights. Downtown Grand Rapids' modern revival is often dated from this building's opening, and the claim is more than civic pride: the arena proved downtown could draw the region back in at night.

November is when the Griffins' season finds its shape — roster settling, the first real standings pressure, and the holiday home dates that anchor the winter calendar. Furniture City News will cover the club the West Michigan way: the prospects, the parent club's shadow, and the building that made downtown a destination. See you at the Freezer.
